Architect, teacher, journalist, town planner and cultural entrepreneur, Sir Charles Reilly was a leading figure of the early-20th-century British architectural scene. This book takes an in-depth look at Reilly's career. Charles Reilly trained several generations of students in the Liverpool School of Architecture, many of whom later became important figures, including the Modernist architects George Checkley and Maxwell Fry. Liverpool graduates helped shape parts of the former British Empire in what became known as the "Liverpool manner" and helped establish the Liverpool School as Britain's foremost center for architectural training and one of the most famous in the owrld. With the industrialist Lord Leverhume, Reilly was instrumental in founding in Liverpool the UK's first university department of town planning, which also had an impact around the world. This text looks at Reilly's career in it's entirety via a series of case studies of his built work. Among other issues, the author also considers Reilly's involvement in cultural enterprises such as the establishment of the Liverpool Repertory Theatre, his journalism, transatlantic links and town-planning theories.
